Dev Notes #2: Strike Phase/Archnotes

We are continuing the Dev Notes series, this time with an in-depth look into some of the more basic mechanics of Strike Phase and how the Archnotes cards work. Please let us know if there is more you would like us to cover as we continue to come out with these.



Strike Phase:


The player whose turn it is must declare all their strikes at the same time against their intended targets, which can either be the opposing Characters or the opposing player. At this point there is a window of opportunity for both players to activate instant speed cards and effects, following the normal rules of the Book. Once the Book is closed and resolved, the defending player may choose any Character that has not been targeted by a strike to guard against any striking Character. If the striking Character is already targeting a Character, the newly selected guarding Character replaces the original target. However, this does not free up the original target to then guard somewhere else.


Tips and Tricks: You can declare a strike into an opposing Character to prevent it from blocking another one of your strikes. You may take Reflect, but it might help push damage through when it's needed!




Archnotes:


Archnotes follow the same rules as any other card when it comes to timing and when you are allowed to cast them. This means that some Archnotes may only be played on your turn, while others can be played on anyone’s turn. Currently, all Archnotes Characters may only be Convoked on your turn as they follow all standard rules for convoking a Character, with one exception. While Archnotes Characters may be Level 3, instead of paying orbs to Convoke them you must meet their Condition. Once the Condition is achieved, you may play them into the Book without paying the orb cost.


Niche ruling: Coatl of Storms, Saveli only allows itself to be cast when your opponent has searched their deck this turn. Since it cannot be Convoked during your opponent's turn, that means that your opponent must have searched their deck on your turn. (Currently this is only possible through Seylee, Herald of the Land.)


The condition of an Archnotes card must be met to both play the card into the Book and for the card to resolve. This means, for example, if your opponent has 3 Characters and you have 0 Characters and you cast Scorching Serenade, if they are able to remove one of their Characters to drop their total Character count to 2 the condition for Scorching Serenade is no longer being met, meaning the card will fizzle in the Book and fail to resolve. When an Archnotes card fails to resolve, or is removed from the Map after having been successfully played, it always returns to the Archnotes deck face-up and may not be played again for the remainder of the game.
