Hi Everyone!
With Sandy Shores right around the corner and more people playing the game, we wanted to make some blog posts to clear up some of the more intricate parts of the game. Please let us know of more card interactions or rules to cover in the future and we will continue to develop more of these. In this blog post, I will be covering some of the more basic interactions during combat that you will encounter during a game.
Pierce/Reflect:
Pierce and Reflect are the result of the difference between stats during combat. For example, let’s say you had a Celestial Effigy (0/100/100) in Strike position on the Map and your opponent had a Seylee, Herald of the Land (80/40/80) out in Guard position. During the Strike Phase, you declare your Celestial Effigy for a strike targeting your opponent’s Seylee. When combat goes to resolve, you would compare the Strike stat of your Celestial Effigy, in this case 100, against the Guard stat of your opponent’s Seylee, which would be 80. In this instance, your opponent would take the difference between these base stats, which would be 100-80=20 for this example.
Now assume you had the same setup only this time your Celestial Effigy was Synced with a Glystal Blade (+100/+100/+50), giving your Celestial Effigy augmented stats of 100/200/150. During the Strike Phase you declare a strike against the same Seylee from before. You would compare your augmented Strike stat of 200 against their Guard stat of 80, which would be enough to beat the Seylee. However, when you go to determine Pierce, you would still use the base Strike stat of Celestial Effigy (100) to determine the Pierce damage which would still be 20 like the previous example.

The same idea is applied to Reflect damage. Reverse the roles and assume you’re the player with the Seylee in Strike position and your opponent has the Celestial Effigy in Guard. You move into the Strike Phase and declare a strike with Seylee targeting their Celestial Effigy. You would compare the strike of Seylee (40) against the guard of the Celestial Effigy (100). Because the Guard stat is higher, the difference between the two numbers is reflected back at you, which would be 100-40=60 in this case.
And just like with the previous example of Pierce, you always use the augmented stats to determine the outcome of combat, but the base stats to determine Reflect damage.
The same would also be applied if you declared a strike targeting a Character also in the Strike position. You would first compare the augmented stats of both Characters to determine the winner of that combat, and then compare the base Strike stat of your Character to the base Strike stat of their Character and inflict damage accordingly.
There is one last example to cover, and that is what happens when the base Strike stat of the attacker is lower than the base Strike/Guard stat of the defender. In a case like this, no Pierce/Reflect damage is inflicted. Let’s say you have a Seylee in Strike position out with a Glystal Blade Synced to it (180/140/130) against your opponent’s Celestial Effigy (0/100/100) in Guard. Your Seylee has a high enough augmented Strike stat to overcome the Guard stat of the Celestial Effigy. However, because your base strike is lower than their base guard, the Celestial Effigy is removed with no additional Pierce inflicted.
